The Village is undoubtedly one of London’s finest Victorian school conversions. Even the red-brick facades and towering sash windows of these elegant repurposed buildings are meagre preparation for the visually arresting spaces within. None more so than this incredible 5,700 sq ft work of the late, greatly celebrated interior designer, Francois Catroux. The apartments are spread amongst beautifully maintained communal gardens within a private, gated community, just a short walk south of Battersea Park and the river.

The design combines what were formerly separate apartments to create a rare lateral expanse, spread predominantly over a single level. Its cavernous living space is spectacular; open-plan with four-and-a-half metre ceilings and a series of south-facing sash windows that reach its full volume.

Despite its dramatic scale, a sensible balance of intimacy has been carved into the spatial arrangements. Nooks, corridors and snugs give each space a great deal of autonomy and privacy. There is a cocooning effect and a sense of anonymity that owes something to its elevated position on the first floor and its subsequent outlooks. Perhaps more is due to what could conceptually be a hard palette, but is in reality a wonderful canvas for the ever changing natural light.

Dark cement floors, steel, glass, granite and lava stone sound cool and industrial in written form, but their uses here are warm and enveloping in person and achieve a sense of overall permanence.

Two of the three bedrooms are arranged along the northern side of the building, both with en suite shower rooms. At the far end is a large reception, currently an office space with a living area and gas fireplace. In these rooms there is a subtle shift to earthy, dark wood floors.

The master bedroom occupies the south-western corner. From its walk-in wardrobe there are steps up to a mezzanine bathroom and an adjoining gym area. The mezzanine continues along the length of the apartment forming a gallery that overlooks the expansive void of the main reception.

The apartment can be accessed via two separate staircases or by lift. It has the right to three designated spaces within the gated parking area.

The Village became one of the first of London’s major school conversions when it was converted into residential housing in the early 1990s. It was originally called the Lavender Hill School, a pioneering secondary, and technical centre and was built almost exactly a hundred years before its repurposing. As a development it is hugely popular for its secure, gated situation, meticulously cared-for communal gardens and mature trees.
